RUO Definition
"RUO" is an abbreviation for Research Use Only. It is a designation used by regulators such as the FDA and Health Canada for products — often reagents, compounds or instruments — that are in the laboratory research phase and are not intended for clinical or diagnostic use.
Research Use Only (RUO) Explained
Intended purpose
RUO products are intended solely for basic research, pharmaceutical research, or the development of new tests — not for diagnosing, treating or preventing a disease or condition in a person or animal.
Regulatory status
Products labeled "For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures" are exempt from most regulatory requirements that apply to medical devices and drugs, such as premarket approval and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This exemption is what makes them available for research purposes.
Labeling requirement
The prominent RUO labeling serves as a critical warning to prevent their use outside of research. Mislabeling products as RUO when they are actually intended for clinical use is illegal and can lead to enforcement action.
Regulator oversight
Regulators determine a product's intended use based on the "totality of the circumstances," including labeling, advertising, and sales practices. Elev8 Labs sells only to purchasers who acknowledge research use.
Advertising Standards
Consumer-protection authorities ensure that all marketing claims for products are truthful, non-misleading, and supported by appropriate science. We publish test results, not health claims.
All products sold on this site are strictly for research use only. Any use outside of laboratory research is prohibited and may be illegal.
Elev8 Labs is built for serious laboratories.
Every batch is independently tested. Every order ships with documentation available. Every customer agrees to RUO terms before checkout. We take compliance seriously — and we expect our customers to do the same.
